Use cases

Four real-world missions

SafeDrop will progress from proof-of-concept to validated demonstrators across four high-impact application domains — spanning environment, health, food and air.

Four demonstrators

Validated where it matters

Each use case is a replicable demonstrator — tested in realistic conditions and designed for adoption beyond the project.

Water quality

Continuous, on-site detection of heavy metals and pathogens at ppb–ppt levels — enabling utilities and environmental agencies to spot contamination with < 30 min time-to-result rather than waiting days for lab results.

  • Heavy metals (e.g. lead, cadmium, arsenic) at trace levels
  • Waterborne pathogens and biological contaminants
  • < 30 min time-to-result for early-warning response

Point-of-care health (UTI)

Rapid urinary-tract-infection diagnostics delivered at the point of care in minutes — supporting faster, better-targeted treatment and helping to reduce unnecessary antibiotic use.

  • Results in minutes, at the bedside or in the clinic
  • Supports antimicrobial-stewardship goals
  • Low-cost disposable cartridge per test

Food safety

The platform's food-safety ambition spans pesticides, toxins and spoilage markers across the supply chain — helping producers, processors and inspectors catch problems before products reach consumers.

CS3 will be demonstrated on apple juice, benchmarked against LC-MS/MS (R² > 0.95).

  • Contracted demonstrator: apple juice vs LC-MS/MS (R² > 0.95)
  • Broader potential: pesticide and contaminant residues
  • Broader potential: toxins, spoilage markers and supply-chain screening

Air / VOC & drone

Exploratory (TRL 4) — laboratory validation of airborne VOC detection, transitioning to a drone-mounted demonstrator.

CS4 establishes baseline performance for future expansion into atmospheric applications — distinct from the field-validated TRL 5 demonstrators in water, health and food — with a subsequent transition to a drone-mounted demonstrator within WP6 (D6.8).

  • Baseline performance for future atmospheric applications
  • Transition path to a drone-mounted demonstrator (WP6 · D6.8)
